Recently, San Francisco Bay area station Channel 104.9 returned from the dead. Apparently, Gen-Xers are the new Baby Boomers, and FM radio is planning to cash in. Cynical perhaps, but it’s a fact. Gen-Xers are turning 35 and 40, they’ve got high paying jobs, lots of disposable income, and FM radio is desperate to survive. Soon the phrase classic alternative will be crushing the souls of Gen-Xers everywhere, but I digress. What excites me about the return of 104.9 is a reminder that the late 80′s and early 90′s saw the return of the great drummer. No offense to guitar players, but this time period in rock belonged to drummers. Early Pearl Jam releases, Sound Garden, XTC and Smashing Pumpkins were among the many bands that featured great drummers. Aging Gen-Xers and desperate FM programming executives have inadvertently brought brought back a good thing–superb rock drumming!
