The words Tao and Tre Cool do not necessarily flow off of one’s tongue; rather the word Tao and the name Tre Cool might invoke a bit of laughter from within.
Upon closer look, however, Tre doesn’t appear to seperate himself from the drums or any of his surroundings. When playing, he does appear necessarily connected to everything, including the space between his sticks, drumheads and his fans. This post is really about the day that my wife fell totally and unconditionally in love with the music of Green Day. My ensuing jealousy was soon followed by the realization that life and work had, once upon a time, driven her to a mild state of depression. Green Day provided a beautiful escape for her. Following her attendance of the ’05 San Francisco and Sacramento shows, she approached me with a request that I teach her to play drums. She wanted to learn “Are We the Waiting“. Turns out it was Tre she’d latched on to. I’m now convined that the real attraction was Tre’s complete loss of separation from everything around himself. His technical prowess may be somewhat limited, but to watch and/or listen to him play, one gets the sense that Tre Cool is completely lost in the moment of his craft. He appears to be necessarily connected with everything around himself…connected to everything that is everything. That is the Tao of Tre Cool.

Hi!
You’ve got me giggling because your wife and I have something in common. Due to the persistance of a friend, I “discovered” Green Day in late April. Something about them connected with me and allowed me to find my inner voice and inner musician.
We had a “cocktail” drum kit set up that had hardly been played. My husband returned from a business trip to find that I had beaten the crap out of the poor thing but was impressed with what I had learned. He’s a bass player. In late June we got me a five piece kit and we jam together. Yep, The Cool did it. I’ve watched many videos and my husband even admits that Tré is a very entertaining drummer to watch. Tré was the catalyst, but I do listen to other music. He was, however, the reason I ended up here on your blog. I was surfing for something else with him in mind, then this popped up. LOL!
Deb, Very cool! I should right more about my wife. I drew a number of comments doing in on a blog called DunkinDonutsTalk (search Discrete Drinking of Dunkin Donuts Coffee in Good Will Hunting). On the topic at hand, Sami hasn’t been playing much lately, but still loves GreenDay and Tre. She kindly calls me her favorite drummer ever in the whole wide world. One of the many reasons I love her so.
